The endless unspoilt beaches and clear, warm Mediterranean waters are perhaps the more obvious attractions. The Costa Blanca is also rich in culture and history with, for example, quaint and highly traditional fishing villages harmoniously coexisting alongside the more modern tourist resorts. Costa Blanca Towns & AttractionsThe town and port of Javea in the northern Costa Blanca is typical of the region. The old town of Javea, built in the main from original Tosca sandstone, sits astride a hillside overlooking the beach resort. It is dominated by a fortified Gothic church, known as “Iglesia de San Bartolome” dating from the 15th century. Javea is still a working fishing port and the port area itself is nowadays something of a mixture of the old and the new, with shops, bars and restaurants catering for the increased tourist trade. The “Arenal” district, surrounding the largest sandy beach in the area, is as busy, vibrant and colourful as you would expect of a major tourist resort. Live music is a regular feature of the many bars to be found here, and a variety of local handicrafts can be bought from the many stalls. | ![]() View of Javea and Montgo from a Distance |
Staying in the northern Costa Blanca, Denia too is still a working fishing harbour. Its historic fishermen’s quarter with cobbled streets and traditional whitewashed houses, together with the 18th century “Castillo de Denia”, gives visitors a glimpse of the history of the town. However the tourist is well catered for, with 20 miles of “Blue Flag” beaches to be found to the north of the town plus a modern marina and a commercial ferry terminal from which the Balearic Islands are just a few hours away. Denia also is renowned for its seafood, not least the famous “gamba roja” (red shrimps) and its many cultural festivals which take place at regular intervals throughout the year.
Natural attractions in the Costa Blanca include the “Fuentes del Algar” or Algar Waterfalls in the moutains inland from Altea, together with the breathtaking “Cuevas del Canelobre” or Canelobre Caves.
