AttractionsCarnivals and festivals are an important part of Cypriot tradition and Limassol is no exception. The annual carnival in Limassol, for example, takes place for two weeks in early February. It features a parade of floats, fancy dress, music and a carnival party. Cyprus is renowned for its fine wine and a wine festival takes place in early September in the Municipal Gardens which are dominated by a giant statue of a Cypriot vintner -- the emblem of the festival. The festival revives the ancient worship of Dionysus, the god of wine, together with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Here visitors can sample local wines in virtually unlimited quantities free of charge. | ![]() Carnival Parade in Limassol |
In the “Old Port” area of Limassol, in what was once the Turkish quarter, lies Limassol Castle. This is reputedly the location for the wedding of King Richard I (“Richard the Lionheart”) of England to Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 whilst en route to Jerusalem. The castle is now home to the Cyprus Medieval Museum.
Elsewhere, some 9 miles west of Limassol in the direction of Paphos, lies Kolossi Castle. The castle was originally constructed during the 13th century and at various times in its history has been the headquarters of the Knights Templar and the Knights of the Order of St. John, of Jerusalem.
Limassol is also well known for its varied and fairly boisterous nightlife. A wide range of bars, clubs, restaurants and cafes are on offer featuring music (sometimes live) to suit just about all tastes. Nightlife in Limassol is, on the whole, quieter, and more refined, than that of "clubbers paradise" Ayia Napa and is centred on the 10 mile Limassol seafront.
Rental Property in Limassol
Rental apartments in Limassol are generally located towards the east of the town, in what is considered to be the “tourist” area as opposed to the city centre or port areas. Apartments are in very close proximity to clean, safe beaches – with a host of opportunities for water sports in the warm, clear waters of the Mediterrean. Nearly all accommodation is close to Limassol's modern facilities. Villas or village houses are also available in more rural locations – perhaps in Lania in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Even here, you are still only some 20 minutes’ drive from the beach. Equally, in the countryside location of Souni, you are a mere 10 minutes’ drive from the town centre of Limassol.
