The island of Brac (pronounced "Bratch") is the largest of the central Dalmatian Islands lying off the coast of southern Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. The island is fairly sizeable, roughly 30 miles long by 10 miles wide and has a well developed infrastructure. The main resorts are the capital Supetar and Bol, situated near the famous Zlatni Rat or "Golden Horn" beach. Regular ferry services run from Split and Makarska on the Croatian mainland to the island of Brac. The island can also be reached by catamaran or hydrofoil.

Brac Attractions

The Zlatni Rat or "Golden Horn" beach near Bol is considered to one of the best in the whole of Croatia. A unique tongue shaped peninsula which changes shape according to the wind and tide and which stretches out into the Adriatic Sea, sometimes for a distance almost 600 yards. The beach itself is protected with safety nets but there is plenty of opportunity for water sports including surfing, windsurfing and jet skiing. There is also a SCUBA diving school. The beach at the western end of Zlatni Rat, known as Paklina, is a popular destination for naturists. Other naturist beaches can be found on the east coast of Brac between Supetar and Sumartin.

Brac is also the most elevated of the islands in central Dalmatia and features the mountain of Vidova Gora at a height of just over 2,500 feet. It is possible to drive right to the top of the mountain and from the top to experience breathtaking views of Bol, Zlatni Rat and the other Dalmatian islands. On a clear day it is also possible to see as far as the coast of Italy.

Beneath Vidova Gora, near the village of Murvica, lies Zmajeva Spilja or "Dragon's Cave". The exact history of the cave is uncertain but it features carvings from early Christianity and Slavic mythology, hewn from the stone of the cliff.

The Dominican monastery towards the eastern extremity of Bol was built in the 15th century and was partially responsible for the growth of the town of Bol itself. The monastery today houses a museum of art, archaeology and other fascinating relics from the history of the island. A painting by the late Renaissance Venetian painter Tintoretto is the prized possession of the museum. A botanical garden also forms part of the monastery complex.

Skrip, the oldest settlement on the island of Brac, is almost a museum in its own right with evidence of Illyrian, Roman and Croatian occupation. It is, however, also home to the Brac Regional Museum which houses collections of artefacts from the late antiquity Roman and early medieval periods. The Radojkovic Tower which forms part of the museum dates from the Turkish invasion in the 16th century.

Holiday Rental Accommodation in Brac

As you might expect of such a popular tourist destination, holiday accommodation on Brac is plentiful and is generally of a very high standard. So-called "private" accommodation is popular, wherein the landlord occupies the ground floor of a property and rents out apartments on the higher floors. There are also self contained waterside apartments, seaside houses and luxury villas (often with private swimming pools) to choose from.
