Bulgaria is therefore an ideal location for a traditional beach or water sports holiday. That said, the picturesque mountainous landscape away from the coast also lends itself well to many other activities including climbing, skiing and horse riding. Golf too is becoming increasingly popular, with many new developments.
Major Towns and Cities of Bulgaria
Sofia, one of the oldest capital cities in Europe originally dates from the 8th century BC. It includes amongst its attractions Rila Monastery – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – founded during the 10th century by St. John of Rila and rebuilt during the Bulgarian Renaissance of the 19th century. Elsewhere the Rotunda Sveti Georgi or “Rotunda of St. George” – the oldest building in Sofia was originally constructed by the Romans in the 4th century and continues to be a popular attraction.
Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second city, lies some 80 miles to the south-east of Sofia. Attractions here include the 15th century Great Mosque; the beautiful wooden mansions of the old quarter; and the Ethnographic museum. The central location of the city, close to many of the major tourist attractions throughout Bulgaria, makes it a popular base for holidaymakers.
Varna, on the Black Sea coast to the east of Bulgaria, is a popular destination for beach holidaymakers. It is in close proximity to the major tourist resorts of Golden Sands and Albena – but nevertheless rivals Sofia and Plovdiv in its historical and cultural attractions. The Archaelogical Museum is very popular, as are the Roman Baths. The Sea Garden includes the Dolphinarium which is something of a must for younger visitors. It also features an open-air theatre in which performances take place during the “Summer of Varna”, the annual July festival. Varna also features a selection of fine restaurants offering excellent food with distinctive Turkish and Greek influences. Drink choices include “rakia”, the traditional (and potent) Bulgarian liquor.
