View Holiday Homes Corfu

The celebrated naturalist Gerald Durrell once said of the Ionian island of Corfu: “My childhood on Corfu shaped my life. If I had the craft of Merlin, I would give every child the gift of my childhood.” His sentiments will be well understood by visitors of all ages to the island. The island lies just to the west of mainland Greece and offers an eclectic mix of sandy, shingle and rocky beaches and a green, fertile interior. It is dominated in the north by the peak of Mount Pantocrator at a height of roughly 3,000 feet.

Attractions

Given its location, opportunities for water sports abound on Corfu. Not least of these is SCUBA diving, with numerous diving centres and schools dotted around the island and expert tuition available for less experienced divers. The coastal waters off Corfu are rich in marine life and ideal for diving or for harpoon fishing. Corfu also lends itself well to other physical outdoor pursuits, amongst them golf; horse riding; mountain biking; and tennis. For those seeking something, perhaps a little less active, there are numerous excellent tavernas serving local cuisine and home made wine in a range of interesting locations.

The town of Corfu or “Kerkyra” itself, is steeped in history. It features many significant architectural attractions including perhaps the most famous of all the churches in Corfu, that of St. Spyridon, the patron saint and protector of Corfu. Other key attractions include the ruined Basilica of Paleopolis in the suburb of Kanoni and the 13th century monastery of Panagia Palaiokastritsa.

Elsewhere, Mount Pantocrator is readily accessible by car or by a locally organised trip. On a clear day it provides stunning views of destinations as far away as Albania or Italy and is home home to Mount Pantocrator Monastery. The monastery, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, was originally constructed in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 17th century.

Located some 6 miles from Corfu Town in the village of Gastouri, the Achillion Palace – the birthplace of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh – is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the whole of Corfu. It was originally constructed in the late 19th century as the summer retreat of Elizabeth, Empress of Austria. This beautiful building – set in equally beautiful gardens – now also houses a museum, a restaurant and even a casino!

Rental Accommodation

Accommodation in Corfu is available for rental on both a short and a longer term basis. Locations, sizes and budgets are as diverse as the island itself with something to cover most tastes. Couples or small families may prefer a one or two, bedroom apartment in or around the lively and atmospheric village of Dassia on the east coast of Corfu. This is very close to the beach and just 9 miles from Corfu Town and its nearby airport. Larger families and groups are also well catered for throughout the island, with beautifully furnished traditional villas – often with swimming pool and gardens – available in locations such as the settlement of Vigla in the north and the idyllic resort of Agios Stefanos in the north-west.
