Major Croatian Towns & CitiesThe city of Zagreb, the capital of Crotia, is divided into three distinct districts. The cobbled streets of the Gornij Grad or "Upper Town" are home to the Presidential Palace and the Church of St. Mark, amongst many other historical attractions. The Dobji Grad or "Lower Town" features many cultural attractions in the form of restaurants, cafes, theatres and parks. Split on the Adriatic coast is the second largest city in Croatia. The most important attraction, architecturally speaking, is the Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian originally constructed between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The inner city of Split, built around the Palace, has been designated a site of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the ancient fortified city of Dubrovnik is also situated on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Indeed it is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic". Dubrovnik has suffered over the years from a major earthquake in 1667 and from the armed conflict of the early 1990s. The city remains nonetheless a feast of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
Attractions
Croatia is a land of nature and national parks. The Papuk Nature Park for example, around the lakes of Jankkovac, is home to deer and wild boar. Many sites of archaeological and historical interest are to be found within the boundaries of the park. The ruined fortress town of Kamengrad, for example, originally dates from the 13th century and was used during the 16th century to house a Turkish garrison.
Crna Mlaka, situated to the south east of Jastrebrasko, a small town between Zagreb and Karlovac, is home to a special ornithological wildlife sanctuary. The ponds of Crna Mlaka are rich in fish, amphibian and reptile life and more than 200 species of bird have been registered at the site. Crna Mlaka can be reached easily by main road or via the Zagreb to Rijeka railway line.
