Dubrovnik is widely held to be one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Europe. The city has a sunny climate, warm seas and high quality beaches as well as a range of historical attractions and places of interest. One of the most popular ways to see Dubrovnik is to take a “Walking Tour” which may include some of the city's major sites such as the Old Town; the City Walls; The Stradun; and The Fanciscan Monastery to name but a few.

Dubrovnik - Places of Interest

  • Dubrovnik Old Town -- This used to be one of the most popular sights in Europe until the Balkan conflict which destroyed much of it. Now, with restoration work complete, the old town is once again a sight worth seeing.
  • The City Walls -- The walls in Dubrovnik can be walked round in approximately an hour -- audio tours are also available to highlight points of interest.
  • The Stradun -- Sometimes known as the Placa, the Stradun is the main street in the old city. Originally set up in the 12th century, the street is full of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops.
  • The Franciscan Monastery -- The monastery is located just off the Stradun. The Church of St Francis and the museum are both worth visiting.
  • The Sponza Palace -- The 14th century Sponza Palace was once the mint and customs house for the area. Today it hosts a museum dedicated to fighters in the siege of 1991-2 and the State Archives.
  • The Rector’s Palace -- The Rector’s Palace was once home to the city’s rector. Now the building holds a museum and hosts traditional dances and music shows in summer months.
  • St Blaise’s Church -- This baroque style church dates back to the 18th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The statue inside the church is shown holding a model of the city which is an ideal chance to see how it looked before the devastating 17th century earthquake.
  • The Cathedral -- According to legend this was originally built by Richard the Lionheart to give thanks after surviving a severe storm on the coast.

Other Things to Do in Dubrovnik

One of the most popular ways to see Dubrovnik is to take a “Walking Tour”. These tours are led by trained locals who can give a different insight into the city. Many visitors also like to spend some time exploring the surrounding area -- either under their own steam or with guided tours.

As an example, a short bus/taxi ride will take you to various old villages such as Konavle. This area is perhaps best seen on foot, on horseback or by bike – bike tours are available from Gruda and Cavtat. There are also many opportunities to visit vineyards in this area such as the Peljesac Wine Vineyards.

Dubrovnik - Accommodation to Rent

There are all kinds of rental properties on offer in Dubrovnik -- to suit all tastes, budgets and sizes of party. Tourists looking for self-catering accommodation can choose from studios, flats, apartments, houses and villas. Nowadays, many locals move out of their homes in tourist months and rent them out which is an ideal way to really experience city life close-up.
