The Dalmatian islands are situated off the west coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. The island of Hvar is sometimes known as the "queen" of the Dalmatian islands and is renowned for its healthy, sunny climate. A total of over 2,600 hours of sunshine per year is not uncommon. The average temperature of the air and the sea remains above 20 degrees Celsius between June and October. The island is characterised by lush, colourful and fragrant vegetation in the form of citrus orchards, olive groves and pine forests. Hvar is also home to some of the more beautiful beaches of the region.

Hvar Attractions

The Spanjol Fortress situated on a hill high above the Old Town of Hvar has undergone significant reconstruction and modification during its lifetime. Originally built in the 14th century, the fortress was restored in the late 16th century following an explosion and its construction reinforced during Austrian occupation in the 19th century. The fortress today, houses a restaurant and a small museum. It also provides a good vantage point for spectacular views of Hvar Town and the Pakleni Islands. The remnants of the old city walls can be seen leading down from the fortress to the town of Hvar.

Prominent landmarks in Hvar Town itself include the Cathedral of St. Stephen which dominates the square of the same name. The cathedral includes characteristics of Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles and was constructed in stages during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Elsewhere on the coast, but still only five minutes' walk from the centre of Hvar, stands the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Grace. The monastery was built in the 15th century and nowadays also houses a museum.

The harbour of Hvar Town is first point of contact with Hvar for many people and can be an interesting place to while away a few hours. The harbour area has something of an exotic feel, with palms trees and café-bars where you can enjoy a beer or an ice cream while watching the comings and goings of the many foreign boats.

The harbour area is also the location of the famous "Carpe Diem" discotheque and bar. You can eat breakfast here, in the morning but the club is popular with dancers returning from a day at the beach. In the early evening Carpe Diem becomes a mass of gyrating, scantily clad bodies and pulses with beat and energy.

The pebbled beach at Hvar can become extremely crowded during high season and some visitors opt instead to take one of the regular water taxis to the nearby Pakleni Islands. The beaches here are generally more restful than those on the shores of Hvar Town but are also favoured destinations of naturists, particularly those of the older generation.
