View Holiday Homes Languedoc Roussillon

The Languedoc-Roussillon region of France lies in the deep south of the country and has borders with Spain and the Mediterranean Sea. The region is famous for the wine it produces, and contains within its borders some 740,300 acres of vineyards, the climate being perfect for wine production.

Major towns of Languedoc-Roussillon

Alès lies on the banks of the Gardon River, situated at the bottom of the Cévennes mountain range and as such is located in picturesque surroundings. The town is one of the most important manufacturers of raw silk in the south of France and it is home to a mineral field, mining coal, iron and zinc. The town has many points of interest, including several fountains, the largest of which is situated in the centre of the river and the 18th century Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral.

Another significant town in the region is Agde, located on the river Hérault and just four kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. The town dates back to Greek times, indeed its name comes from the Greek Agathe Tyche, meaning 'good fortune'. Agde has a distinctive cathedral, and the panoramic views of the town by the river are idyllic.

Béziers is well known for hosting Feria du Béziers, a famous five day bullfighting event, to which a million visitors are attracted every year. The town is located on a small hill above the river Orbs, ten kilometres from the Mediterraenean coastline and has a long history stretching back to pre-Neolithic times.

Uzes is another prominent town, situated north of Nimes and lying at the source of the Eure, where an aqueduct was built in Roman times to provide water to the local city of Nimes. The town contains the remains of its walls as well as monuments to former bishops. The Tour Fenestrelle or 'Window Tower' is the most recognisable icon of Uzes. The town's cathedral was destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade of the 13th century, only to be rebuilt and destroyed again in the Wars of Religion during the 16th century. Once again it was rebuilt in the following century but was stripped during the French Revolution of the 18th century.

The town of Quillan is situated on the foothills of the Pyrenees and is a popular destination for white water sports including rafting, canoeing and kayaking. As well as water sports, it is a particularly good area for bird watching, rambling and has a number of outdoor cafes. It is a thriving small town, with a wide range of amenities such as a cinema and markets twice weekly. The town is steeped in culture, with a Cathar castle just ten miles away at Puilaurens standing on a rock above the Boulzare Valley.
