Sofia AttractionsThe Cathedral of St. Alexandar Nevski is one of the biggest attractions in Sofia. The cathedral was built in the early 20th century to commemorate the Russian casualties of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 which resulted in the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The cathedral is unarguably a beautiful building and its huge central dome is covered in genuine gold leaf. Almost every surface of the interior is filled with a fresco of some kind. A short distance from the cathedral is the Church of Sveta Sofia after which the city is named. The plain brick building originally dates from the 6th century although it has been extensively restored on a number of occasions in the interim. A display of pictures and photographs traces the history of the church. Between the Church of Sveta Sofia and the cathedral stand the bronze lions and perpetual flame of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. According to tradition the Orthodox Church blesses the army and its flags before the monument, during Epiphany. | ![]() Alexander Nevski Cathedral |
