A majestic city with a fascinating history and culture, well connected with Zagreb via fast and regular train links, Split and its surrounding area is fast becoming one of the many must-see destinations in Eastern Europe. It is the second largest city in Croatia and the largest on the Adriatic coast, strategically located to explore the coastal area and islands of the Croatian Adriatic and is a mere ferry trip away from Italy.

The birth of Split

Way back in 295AD, Roman emperor Diocletian called for the construction of a magnificent palace in the Bay of Aspalathos to be used for his retirement. The emperor lived there until his death in 313AD, but the palace continued to be used for several centuries as a retreat by many Roman rulers and, later, by the citizens of Split themselves! In fact the city of Split owes its very existence to the construction of this palace as its streets, walls and archways have been integrated to form the old town. Although parts of Diocletian's Palace are in ruins today, it still retains all its historic glory and has become Split's greatest tourist attraction. It was built in the style of a huge Roman military fortress, covering over 9 acres, and visitors from around the world can admire the wealth of character within its ancient archways, its mausoleum, towers and courtyards. Its value was recognised in 1979 when it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is now officially recognised as one of the best preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world.

It is thanks to the palace that Split has developed into such a beautiful and highly cultural city. Most of the city's historical and cultural buildings surround the palace. There are several interesting old Churches, museums and art galleries including the Museum of Croatian Archaeological monuments and the City Museum of Split.

Split today

No less worthy of mention and not to be outshone by the great historical identity of this city, is the fact that it is also stunningly beautiful, flanked by the Dalmatian mountains, stretching downwards across a superb landscape to be lapped by the azure waters of the Croatian Adriatic. It has a magnificent port and beautiful seafront, architecture that is proud and dignified, with magnificent squares and sophisticated shopping areas as well as quaint outdoor markets selling flowers and fruit. As for Dalmatian cuisine, Split restaurants serve some of the healthiest dishes in the world, specialising in fresh fish, seafood and vegetables served with locally produced quality wines. Split has come a long way since the days of Emperor Diocletian. It is now a thoroughly modern, vibrant European city where cafe culture, people-watching and shopping are the order of the day.

The surrounding area

Split is the springboard and ideal location for exploring the whole of the Dalmatian Riviera and the islands of the beautiful Croatian Adriatic. The coastal landscape here is spectacular and features a myriad of islands and coves as well as magnificent sandy beaches flanked by rich greenery and quaint fishing villages with boats bobbing in the sea. The nearby islands of the Adriatic, such as Hvar, Vis, Brac and Lastovo are easily reached by regular ferries from Split and are a relaxed haven of nature and beauty. The islands are coated with vast fields of lavender, ancient olive trees and vineyards and are dotted with little towns where the pace of life is distinctly relaxed and savoured to the full. The most beautiful beaches can be found on these islands, particularly Vis, and the islands have a distinctly sophisticated and Italian flavour. The best way to explore them is by boat and you are guaranteed to pass more than a few ostentatious yachts during your journey.

Split rental accommodation

Most of this is from private accommodation providers, proving that Split really is a resort for the independent traveller.
